Is that...? Are those RIBS?! You look delicious! You mind if I put a little barbeque sauce on ya? I got my own recipe.

– Hangry commenting on the player’s delicious ribs.

Hangry the Pig is a recurring enemy in Dark Deception and a playable monster in Monsters & Mortals.

Hangry is a member of the Joy Joy Gang and one of the overseers of Joy Joy Land, a theme park-like realm in the Dark Dimension that houses the seventh of Malak's ring pieces. Hangry, along with his groupmates Penny the Chicken and Lucky the Rabbit, kill anyone who intrudes upon their territory, but not before tormenting and toying with their victims.

Appearance[]

Hangry is a large, pink animatronic pig sporting a large snout, wide eyes, and floppy ears. He appears overweight, much like Penny, and possesses three fingers instead of four like the other Joy Joy Gang members. His limbs are somewhat stubby, with the fabric covering his arms being noticeably baggy. The seams of his suit are also quite prominent, with one in particular running the length of his torso.

Hangry's mouth is constantly agape, dripping with saliva and a maroon substance implied to be "barbeque sauce." His cheeks also seem to have a slight blush. His only clothing is a tattered, dirty white T-shirt with the words "I ❤️ Ribs" inscribed on it.

Hangry adopts his Nightmare mode appearance after being horrifically electrocuted by Doug with a fuse box and a wet electrical hazard. The suit fabric below his nose is now scorched off, revealing metal endoskeleton jaws with realistic gums and grimy teeth. His right eyeball is also missing, revealing a robotic eye with a glowing red iris.

Personality[]

Hangry's not himself when he's hungry. Kind of loses control around fresh meaty ribs. Ya know what I mean? Goes a little crazy.

– Lucky

The Notorious PIG Album Cover

Much like his fellow Joy Joy Gang members, Hangry introduces himself as a benign animal mascot, adopting the persona of a ravenous and simple-minded glutton. This guise does little to bely his true nature, given Doug's previous hostile encounters with Lucky and Penny.

Like his cohorts, Hangry is a psychotic murderer whose only purpose is to serve Malak and to safeguard his ring piece. He is the most temperamental of the three, frequently complaining about trivial matters and relentlessly charging after any mortals he spots, tearing down anything in his path. While he initially comes off as friendly and affable, this quickly changes once his hunger sets in, with Hangry vocalizing his desire to mutilate and devour Doug.

Hangry remains committed to his simple-minded and rowdy persona as he threatens and pursues Doug, making half-serious and often demeaning remarks toward him. Despite this, Hangry has enough restraint to be patient and tactical at times, hiding in the walls and helping his fellow members stage ambushes against Doug.

Abilities[]

Brute Force[]

Hangry is extraordinarily strong for his size and is one of the most powerful non-boss enemies in the game in terms of raw strength. He can obliterate a sizable portion of a thick concrete wall with a single punch and demolish doors and steel walls with ease. He demonstrates his strength again as he tosses Doug a considerable distance toward the exit portal.

Enhanced Smell[]

Like real pigs, Hangry has a keen sense of smell that can track nearby mortals. He uses this ability to detect Doug behind walls, even when using the Vanish power.

Hive Mind[]

Because he is cloned from the same source, Hangry's memories can transmitted to all of his clones, allowing them to take his place if he is unavailable.

Dark Deception[]

Chapter 4: Mortal Ramifications[]

Hangry Intro

Hangry is one of the primary enemies of the game's seventh level, Mascot Mayhem.

Hangry greets Doug at the Zone 2 checkpoint, adopting a benign and simple-minded persona similar to Lucky and Penny. He introduces himself bluntly and expresses his hunger and passion for ribs. He then eerily exclaims about Doug's "ribs" and casually voices his desire to eat Doug. He then hunts for Doug throughout Zone 2 alongside Lucky and their clones.

Hangry Breaking

Throughout the zone, Hangry will frequently burst out of a wall near Doug to ambush him (doubling as a teleportation ability), giving chase should he be evaded. Although he is the slowest among the Joy Joy Gang members, Hangry and his clones can still burst through walls and closed doors as they pursue Doug, intercepting him if he is not careful. However, if Hangry chases Doug for long enough, he will stop and catch his breath for twelve seconds (this is reset upon him teleporting to a wall), allowing Doug to gain some distance. If he loses sight of Doug, Hangry will patrol the area, resuming chase should he spot him again. Hangry's clones will spawn after a certain period upon encountering Lucky.

Hangry's abilities and patterns are among the more complex in the game and are explored in-depth in this video.

JJG Corruption

Hangry and his cohorts approach Doug as he opens the fuse box, with Hangry comically questioning why Doug is pressing the power button. Before they can kill him, Doug uses the fuse box to electrocute the trio, heavily damaging and incapacitating them. As Doug leaves to enter Zone 3, the mascots' eyes follow him, indicating they are far from finished.

JJG Zone 2 Begin

Hangry accompanies his fellow members as they confront Doug at the Zone 3 entrance, condemning him for defiling his mouth. After the cutscene ends, the trio chases Doug into the zone and disperses to search for him. Hangry searches for Doug alongside Lucky and Penny as he collects the last of the shards.

Hangry Chase Zone3

Hangry functions identically to how he did in Zone 2, bashing through metal walls to ambush and intercept Doug. This mechanic is required to unlock a secret file behind a wall in the central-eastern edge of the level (see secrets).

JJG Crushed

Hangry and the JJG are destroyed by Doug when he activates the crusher. Malak revives them using Project Joy Kill, and Hangry shouts with an appraisal about his new body and how he'll be able to eat way more ribs with it. In one collective, Joy Kill assaults the player until they manage to escape the theme park, only to be stopped in place.

Hangry Catch

A Hangry clone violently attacks the player alongside a clone, Lucky and Penny, as a punishment for almost escaping the theme park. Malak marks the player's mind and then orders Hangry to toss the player into the escape portal anyway, to his large disappointment, as he thought he was told he could consume him.

Hangry in Ballroom

During the ballroom cutscene after Mascot Mayhem, Hangry spawns from Malak's clone and guards the ninth portal, Holiday Horror.

Hangry the Pig returns as a Power class monster in Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals.

Hangry has the second-highest HP in the game and deals the most damage but suffers from long attack cooldown and slow movement speed. To make up for his slow movement speed, it is best to use the "Speed Boost" item from the Portal Boxes whenever possible, as well as "Primal Fear," "Speed Drain," and "Banana Peel" to slow down his opponents for a quick and deadly kill. Due to his already high damage output, he has little need for the "Frenzy Mode" item. This makes Hangry great at killing players. Hangry will attack by punching (light attack) and uppercuts (heavy attack).

His ultimate ability, "Rib Crusher," when used, will make Hangry do a ground pound onto the floor, sending a blast wave that deals 120 damage. Since it takes 2 seconds to take effect, it is best used when an enemy cannot dodge it or right next to one. It can also go through walls of the mazes because of the shockwave.

This is great for doing a ton of damage to foes. Hangry's attack damage can be deadly when paired with a heavy attack.

Hangry retains the same look in the Nightmare skin as in the original game.

The Notorious PIG
The Notorious P.I.G. Soulshard Common Hangry is set to his Nightmare design but takes on a heavily monochromatic color scheme, reminiscent of his rap song "The Notorious P.I.G."

Relationships[]

Malak[]

Like his cohorts, Hangry is loyal to Malak and complies with any orders he is given. However, he is more reluctant to obey him than Lucky, complaining that Malak reneged on an agreement to let him eat Doug and hesitating to return Doug to Bierce's Ballroom when ordered.

Doug Houser[]

Hangry treats Doug much like any other mortal he encounters, with a casual demeanor and a ravenous appetite. His statements range from lighthearted remarks to violent threats, implying he experiences mood swings when he is hungry. Hangry becomes far more deranged and agitated after Doug electrocutes him, showing little restraint as he expresses his desire to devour the mortal. Upon capturing him, Hangry happily beats him alongside his cohorts and expresses frustration when Malak prohibits Hangry from eating him.

Elise Houser[]

Hangry attempted to murder Elise upon encountering her, destroying a sizable portion of the castle wall after missing a swing.

Lucky the Rabbit[]

Hangry is subservient to Lucky and occasionally mentions him when searching for Doug, stating that Lucky ordered him to "rip [Doug's] arms off." They appear to have a somewhat uneasy friendship on account of Hangry's simple-mindedness and temperament, but otherwise, they synergize well in chases. His rap song implies that he occasionally cooks "mortal meat" for Lucky if he feels like it.

Penny the Chicken[]

Hangry works with Penny as a fellow underling to accomplish Lucky's commands if needed. While they are rarely seen interacting, they appear to have an amiable relationship, with Penny expressing her to eat Doug's ribs much like Hangry upon fusing with Joy Kill.

Parallels and Symbolisms[]

Going by the theory suggesting that each nightmare portal is tied to one of Dante Alighieri's Nine Layers of Hell and the monsters inside them are manifestations of sin, the Joy Joy Gang animatronics may represent Gluttony. They embody those who are obsessed with seek out pleasure and happiness through various means, leading to their demise. Each of the animatronic members represent For instance, Hangry represents those who turned to the gluttony of food and possessions, Penny represent those who turned to vain love and attention-seeking (which is demonstrated by Penny's love towards her appearance, Lucky, and Doug himself), and Lucky is those who turn to adrenaline, competition, and insanity, but particularly, the intense desire of victory. Although gluttony is often associated with compulsively eating food (like Hangry), in The Divine Comedy, gluttony is also defined as overindulgence in any form of addiction or obsession. Unlike the previous monsters, the Joy Joy Gang doesn't possess a human soul and instead they are killing machines built for the purpose of violence and chaos, implying they are either a supernatural being or a creation of Malak.

Thematically, this could be why they were the ones to finally defeat Doug. His vain pursuit of happiness is what led to the deaths of his wife and daughter, which is why he’s attempting to bring them back. Overall, he was the most guilty of all three, far more than any of the previous ones. For example, Doug spent excessive time at work, prioritizing money. Instead of divorcing his wife like a normal person, he feared losing his money and thus remained married. He also engaged in infidelity, seeking shallow affection. Though it's a bit speculative, it's plausible that he considered a drastic action with his wife simply out of selfishness, justifying what would undoubtedly be considered murder. These were his personal demons - while other monsters had elements applied or associated with him and his actions, this gang was his direct opposition. They epitomize the mindset that led him to commit murder. Additionally, the Joy Joy Gang's aim to make Doug "one of the joyful" appears to symbolize Doug's previous belief that his wife and daughter were draining the joy from his life, fueling his resentment towards them.

Alternatively, it could also be possible that each member of the Joy Joy Gang represents a certain animal that humans kill en masse under different circumstances:

  • Penny: Both eggs and chicken (meat)
  • Hangry: Bacon, pork, ham, etc
  • Lucky: Rabbit meat and fur is used in clothing, and generally killed off as pests and/or an invasive species.

In a few iterations of the Bible, animals are said not to have souls in the way humans do. Animals are also creatures driven by their base desires, such as hunger, self-preservation, and sex. The Joy Joy Gang all take these most basic instinctive drives way up; Lucky is obsessed with himself and is described as being a very sexual being, Penny is obsessed with her physical appearance (which animals may sometimes focus on to find a proper mate, especially since Penny, as a bird, is literally always "preening" herself) and Hangry is obsessed with satisfying his constant hunger. The Joy Joy Gang represent the most basic of animalistic drives with none of the positive traits both animals and humans are capable of having.

Trivia[]

  • Going by the theory suggesting that each nightmare portal is tied to one of Dante Alighieri's Nine Layers of Hell and the monsters inside them are manifestations of sin, the Joy Joy Gang animatronics may represent Gluttony since each animatronic is obsessed with something: Lucky with winning, Hangry with food, and Penny with her appearance and Doug himself.
    • Although Gluttony is often associated with compulsively eating food (like Hangry), in The Divine Comedy, "Gluttony" is defined as overindulgence in any form of addiction or obsession.
  • Hangry the Pig's design is inspired by many animatronic and robotic characters, including those from the Showbiz and Chuck E. Cheese franchises. He may also be inspired by T-800 from the Terminator franchise, Bloaty Pizza Hog from Invader Zim, Jean Bon from Courage the Cowardly Dog, Martin Brown from Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, the pig masks worn by John Kramer and his apprentices from the Saw franchise, and Piggsy from Manhunt.
  • Hangry's rap, "The Notorious PIG," reveals a few attributes about Hangry:
    • Hangry mentions he had a keen sense of smell, which allows him to detect where Doug is, even when he uses Vanish.
      • Glowstick Entertainment channel members leaked the background footage of Hangry chasing Doug and busting through doors before the music video's release.
  • Based on observations, Hangry is the least talkative Joy Gang member. This could mainly be because he gets tired quickly, so he has to avoid talking too much to maintain his energy while chasing Doug.
  • Vince jokingly admitted in a Q&A livestream that Hangry eats ribs with his Barbecue sauce.
    • Vince confirmed in a separate post that Hangry was the most challenging enemy to program in Chapter 4.
    • In the 12th Q&A, this was revealed to be because of his complex ability to break doors.
  • Hangry has the most taunts out of all enemies in the game while searching for/chasing the player, having around 46.
  • Hangry may represent automatonophobia, the fear of animatronics, puppets, or marionettes. He may also represent technophobia, the fear of technology, or swinophobia, the fear of pigs.
  • His name is a portmanteau of the words "angry" and "hungry".
    • In fact, the term "Hangry" means being irritable due to hunger.
  • Hangry the Pig is one of the only enemies in the game who can switch into Nightmare Mode before collecting all of the soul shards. This can be seen happening in Zone 3, though this is primarily because he was electrocuted by Doug Houser.
  • When asked if Hangry could break through walls, Vince simply said Hangry breaks through everything.
  • He is the only non-boss enemy that can destroy physical objects within the level.
  • So far, Hangry is the only enemy required for the player to access a secret within the level.
  • His name has been hilariously mistaken for "Henry, " likely because Lucky mishears him when he refers to him.
  • According to Vince in the fifteenth Q&A, the Joy Joy Gang will return in Chapter 5.
  • The Joy Joy Gang are the fifth enemies that Doug can kill, with the others being the Clown Gremlins, the Goliath Clowns, the Reaper Nurses, and the Trigger Teddies.
  • Unlike the rest of JJG's character-select animations in Monsters & Mortals, Hangry does not scratch himself.
