"Bearly Buried" is the eighth level in Dark Deception. It is playable in Chapter 4. This level takes place in the The Cave and features the Trigger Teddies and the boss, Mama Bear.

Introduction[]

Mama Bear Intro
Blue Orb Bearly Buried
No more lucky breaks, mortal. Fate has finally caught up with you. Time for you to join your family, permanently!

– Malak

After being dragged into the portal, Malak throws Doug to the ground and tells him a story about Bierce offering her soul so she can become a star and later uses the ring pieces to contain herself in the ballroom referred as a pocket dimension. Mama Bear then walks out of the cabin and the two have a conversation. In those lines, it is revealed that the ring pieces Malak had stolen is hidden here. Mama Bear then calls three of her babies (the Trigger Teddies) to bring Doug inside into the kitchen. The Trigger Teddies then carry Doug inside and place him on the table. As they were looking at them, a mysterious orb appears, tells Doug that it will help him escape, and electrocutes the teddies, allowing Doug to get up to his knees.

Pre Act I[]

No...It's not time yet. I will help you. Escape.

– Blue Orb

Teddies Sleeping Bedroom

After getting up, the player will find in shock that he had lost all of their powers, since Malak already took the ring piece. Unlike any other level, Bearly Buried's main objective is to retrieve the stolen ring pieces and get back Doug's powers before escaping. The mysterious orb appears again in front of the basement, guiding Doug upstairs, pass a bedroom where some Trigger Teddies are sleeping and into Mama Bear's room, which opens up to an attic maze. A number of Trigger Teddies are found sleeping in it, while an awake one is patrolling the area. The orb tells Doug that the first ring piece is in the attic before disappearing, not helping Doug with his current situation. Doug has to sneak pass the sleeping teddies, and can't sprint even if he was chase by the patrolling teddy, or the teddies will be awaken by his footsteps and chase him with an inescapable speed (the patrolling one is slower, so chill). After sneaking past the teddies and reaching the end of the maze, the orb tells Doug that a ring piece is close by, which is in a room in the end of the attic. Doug collects the piece, getting back his Vanish power.

Mama Awakens Some Teddies

Once it's collected, Doug peaks through a hole. Malak and Mama Bear are seen below talking. Mama Bear tells Malak that Doug has escaped, which Malak is furious of. He asks if Mama Bear hid one of the ring pieces in the attic (therefore revealing that Mama Bear is in charge of hiding the pieces), and Mama Bear gives and affirmation. Malak then reveals that Doug is already in the attic and has got one of the ring piece, which was one of the funny moments in the game. Mama Bear looks up, saw Doug and told two of her babies to 'greet' him. Malak talks to Doug through his mind, reminding him that Malak is aware of his location due to the seal attached on Doug, before shouting out Doug's location.

Act I[]

Why the rush? Please, stay for dinner.

– Mama Bear

Teddies Sleeping Cabin

Doug immediately exits the attic room, but the two Trigger Teddies came into the room in search of Doug. Players can evade them easily via the newly retrieved Vanish. Upon getting back to the attic maze, Doug has to collect 18 soul shards and go into the basement. Trigger Teddies will be awake and roaming around this time. They will pursue Doug if he is to get into their line of sight, latch on him and detonate themselves, killing Doug and anything nearby in the process. Doug can use Vanish and avoid them while collecting the shards. Once Doug collects all the shards, the teddies will not despawn (may be a bug). Doug leaves the area, gets into Mama Bear's room and opens a door, getting jumpscared by a flying Mama Bear head in result (this jumpscare is harmless). The mysterious orb guides Doug into the basement, where the ring barrier that is originally there is destroyed. The basement has a tunnel which leads to a cave system. Doug travels around the cave (which takes quite a long time).

Mama Bear Cave Interlude
Teddies Act2

Then Mama Bear and the Trigger Teddies proceed to ambush Doug through the tunnels, but Doug gets another ring piece (the Primal Fear piece) and breaks down boards to where the ring altar is. The tunnel behind Doug comes to a close by collapsing, cutting off Mama Bear and her babies. Doug then uses Primal Fear to get the bear traps out the way, which can also be useful when a soul shard is inside a bear trap. Doug breaks down more boards and heads into Zone 2. Mama Bear is roaming around with the Trigger Teddies, which she will mess with Doug's vision, running at a quick pace if he is a certain distance near her. She will spawn Trigger Teddies throughout the cave system as well. Doug must also find another ring piece (the Telekinesis one) through the cave.

Boss Battle I[]

Now I've got you.

– Mama Bear

CaveTeaserSteam3

After completing zone 2, Doug leaves and climbs down ladders, where he ends up in a room filled with holes with green liquid. Mama Bear then traps him in the area, saying "I've got you now, Mama's coming!" beginning the boss fight.

Mama Bear Boss Fight1

Mama Bear extends her arms through the holes, and tries to crush Doug with her hands. A Trigger Teddy can randomly come out of the holes too. This causes boulders to come falling down. Then Mama Bear makes her head pop up through one of the holes. Doug must pick up a boulder, and throw it at Mama Bear's face, causing her to take damage and eventually lose the battle. This heavily frustrates Malak, and he offers a deal to Doug should he somehow survive: live the perfect life with his wife and daughter exactly as he wished they could be, and have him collect his soul for his army. Then, Doug progresses to Zone 3, the final zone.

Act II[]

You can't run forever, mortal.

– Malak

Teddies Unmasking Themselves

Now, Doug has to gain back three ring pieces, which are stolen by frenzied Trigger Teddies, 2 of which are fake. This is made easier via the Speed Boost returning to his arsenal after the first boss. Eventually, Doug returns to the center of the cave, where the spirit severs Malak's vision from him. He heads to a mysterious glowing green light.

Boss Battle II[]

Like Bierce, you are an abomination! I can never let you return to her. This place will be your grave...

– Mama Bear

Mama Bear Boss Fight2

The light leads to a pool of green liquid and Mama Bear, who jumps in and mutates into her second form. She swings her arms at him, spins around the stage with both arms, and transforms into an invincible spiked form faster than his running speed before leaping out of the water and summoning Trigger Teddies. Doug uses his Primal Fear and Vanish powers to take down the beast and recover the Teleportation ring piece.

Final Act[]

Bierce! Open the portal!

– Doug Houser

Mutated Bear Mouth Hand

Doug teleports near the exit, but almost dies making a wrong turn since Mama Bear's mutated hand starts chasing him through the tunnel, saying "I'll never let you go!" Doug runs away from the hand and also is pursued by Trigger Teddies. He slides down back to the cabin, where he has to escape. Mama Bear starts breaking through the cabin in one last attempt to kill Doug. Trigger Teddies are also seen crawling on the ceiling and the walls, some even chase Doug.

Mama Bear Escape

Doug leaves the cabin, and runs to the portal, begging Bierce to open the portal. Trigger Teddies come out from the ground, and Mama Bear exits the cabin, saying "Mama Bear is coming to get you." The spirit then opens the portal for Doug, and he escapes. Bierce is surprised and amazed that Doug survived Malak's wrath, and is glad that he is back, and with the ring pieces. Bierce then opens the Mannequins portal.

  • Simply pressing the sprint button will disturb the sleeping teddies.
  • A couple of Malak's lines in the attic cutscene repeat for half a second.
  • Sometimes when getting the ring piece for Vanish and using it, the cooldown indicator does not work.
  • At low framerates, the sound of hitting the floor when falling in the caves may not initially play.
  • There are some places where you can clip inside of the walls and see out of bounds.
  • The boulder Mama Bear breaks out from has no collision.
  • You're not killed if you fall into the acid.
  • In Zone 2 there are some gaps in the walls which you can squeeze into.
  • After stunning Trigger Teddies with the Stun Orb, they will stop moving permanently.
  • Mama Bear and Trigger Teddies can still kill you when stunned.
  • When collecting a ring piece, the cooldown of all the other powers gets reset, but not visually.
  • The chase theme can play even if there are no enemies nearby.
  • In the 1st boss fight, there's an empty pit in which you can fall down and get stuck in.
  • If you stand right in front of Mama Bear's arms when she's attacking, she won't be able to kill you.
  • There are invisible barriers above the acid pits which interfere with the boulders you throw.
  • It's possible to launch yourself up using the boulders.
  • Boulders, after they've been thrown, can still hit Mama Bear when they're not moving.
  • You can get stuck in some of the holes in Zone 3.

  • There's a lot of places where the enemies cannot reach you.
  • When behind Mama Bear, she bends strangely.
  • Red indicators from the enemies can be seen from upper levels.
    • You will be killed when you touch one.
  • If you destroy all teddies holding the ring pieces at once, the real ring piece will become unobtainable.
  • Despite Malak apparently leaving before the 2nd boss fight starts, he will still say "Those are my powers!" when you're using powers.
  • If you skip the cutscene before Mama Bear finishes jumping, her model won't disappear.
  • After defeating Mega Mama, she will disappear for a brief moment before the cutscene starts.
  • The holes created in the cabin when escaping will rotate and face towards the player.

Trivia[]

  • In the third Q&A, Vince said that his favorite Steam achievement in Chapter Four was from this level.
  • In the fifth Q&A, it was confirmed that each level in Chapter 4 will have between 350 - 600 shards, in this case, 630.
  • One of the early video teasers for this level shows how the player freely roams the exterior of the level and walks towards Mama Bear's house by themselves. It's possible that earlier in the level the player needed to collect one ring piece instead of returning the previous ones. However, it is also possible that this was just a demonstration of the location, and the cutscene with Malak had not been made yet at that point.
  • The map was originally thought to be a toy factory because of a model of a factory lacking a texture, eventually being confirmed to being Mascot Mayhem's third zone.
  • The "Bearly Noticeable" achievement confirmed that this level will have multiple ring pieces.
  • The cabin where Mama Bear and her Trigger Teddies were living in, is probably inspired by "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". In addition, the forest environment may also be a reference to similar settings in horror movies like Friday the 13th, The Blair Witch Project, Sleepaway Camp, and the Evil Dead franchise.
  • The cubes in the bedroom on the upper floor spell "Malak" and "Mama Bear".
  • This is the only level where the title card isn't displayed at the beginning of the level.
  • This is also the only level where you have to get multiple ring pieces instead of just one, most of which have a power associated with them.
  • This is currently the only level where Bierce does not communicate with Doug during while collecting the shards. Malak does so instead.
  • This is the first level where you enter against your will.
  • Bearly Buried's portal icon is the only portal with pupils, which seems intended since their old portal icon also had pupils.
  • The "Smarter Than Your Average Bear" achievement is a reference to Hanna Barbera cartoon character, Yogi Bear. This is because Yogi's famous catchphrase is, "I'm smarter than the average bear."
  • The large runes seen in Zone 3 of "Bearly Buried" resemble the Markers from the Dead Space franchise.
    • In addition, the masses of screaming faces making up the walls are visually reminiscent of the walls of faces that appear during the Eclipse in Berserk and Giygas from the Mother franchise (especially his Earthbound incarnation). It is also similar to the deathmatch intermission screen seen in Doom, however.
  • There used to be a display bug that made it impossible to achieve S Rank, it showed up to 3 bonus shards while only 2 bonus shards were found. This bug has now been fixed.
  • In a pre-release version, the first phase of the level had the player having to avoid Trigger Teddies in an attic, making the level very hard. Actually, the enemies should have been asleep and the fact they were awake was an error. If the player were to re-start the level after finishing it, the Trigger Teddies would have been asleep like intended. This error has been fixed in the official release of Chapter 4.
