“ | Another barrier. You know what to do. | ” |
– Bierce |
Barriers are an environmental mechanic in Dark Deception, serving as obstacles that must be removed through specific means. They come in three different forms.
Ring Barriers[]
Ring barriers are purple glowing spheres that safeguard each piece of the Riddle of Heaven. They appear in every level of the game, situated on top of each ring altar surrounding the ring piece. After collecting every soul shard in the level, the barrier will shatter, and the ring piece will be exposed.
Attempting to interact with the altar while the barrier is still up will cause a prompt to appear.
Speed Barriers[]

Speed barriers are red, wall-shaped webs that block off certain pathways and entrances. They can only be destroyed by charging at them with a speed boost.
Instances[]
- In the corridor leading to the school, two speed barriers will block the entrance Upon seeing this, Bierce will summon Doug to the ring altar to obtain the speed power, which can then be used to bypass the barriers.
- Four instances appear in "Elementary Evil"; one at the level entrance, two by the auditorium exits, and one by the zone 2 entrance.
- A few appear in "Stranger Sewers", throughout the sewer hallways.
- A few appear in zone 2 of "Crazy Carnevil", blocking the entrances to certain trap-filled rooms. Three Clown Gremlins will be positioned each barrier, forcing the player to use Primal Fear before destroying them.
- One appear in the x-ray room when the player tries to escape, and many of them are scattered around zone 1 of "Torment Therapy".
- Many are scattered in zone 3 of "Bearly Buried".
Purple Barriers[]

Purple barriers, which are recolored versions of speed barriers, inhibit access to the next area in a level until the current objective has been completed.
Instances[]
- One barrier appears in "Elementary Evil", blocking the entrance to the second zone of the school.
- One barrier appears in "Stranger Sewers", blocking the entrance to the sanctum.
- Several barriers appear in "Crazy Carnevil", blocking zone entrances and shortcuts. Two block the exits to each zone, two block the guillotine path until the ring piece has been collected, and three more lock the player in the carousel area during the Goliath Clowns boss battle.
- Two appear in "Torment Therapy", one blocking the exit of the hospital and one blocking the entrance to the Matron boss battle.
- Four appear in "Mascot Mayhem", one blocking the zone one exit, one blocking the power room in zone two and two guarding the reset button in zone three.
- Nine appear in "Bearly Buried", one blocking the entrance to the basement, one appears in zone 2 after entering, one blocking Mama Bear's first boss battle, one appears when you enter Mama Bear's first boss battle, one blocks the entrance to zone three, one blocks the exit to zone 3, one blocking Mama Bears second boss battle and two appears after entering the second battle area.

Trivia[]
- The Speed and Purple Barriers are used in the levels together (if they are present in the level).
- However "Mascot Mayhem" is the exception since it has purple barriers but lacks speed barriers.
- "Deadly Decadence" is the only level (after obtaining Speed Boost) so far that has none of these two barriers.
