Air Screamers are monsters from the Silent Hill franchise by Konami, released as part of the Silent Hill DLC pack of Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals. Whenever the Trap Time event in "Silent Sacrifice" is activated, six of them are summoned to patrol specific areas of the town of Silent Hill, flying towards anyone who comes too close to them to relentlessly kick them.

Description[]

An Air Screamer as it originally appeared in Silent Hill

Air Screamers are manifestations based on an illustration of a Pterodactylus from The Lost World, albeit bearing the usual characteristics of the manifestations seen throughout the Silent Hill series. The creature's legs and torso, vaguely humanoid, are entirely covered in pale, reddish leathery skin, while its elongated head has two glassy eyes like those of a fish. Standing at roughly half the height of a human and sporting wings that span at least twice its height, Air Screamers are named for their high-pitched screeches.

The monster underwent a drastic redesign in its later appearances, diminishing its resemblance to pterosaurs. It was given horizontal jaws, a more jagged wing shape, and proper talons on the three toes of its feet, which no longer resemble those of a human. However, the Air Screamers in Monsters & Mortals are based off of their original appearance in Silent Hill.

Behavior[]

Air Screamers are the first traps in Monsters & Mortals (and the Dark Deception series as a whole) that are living creatures rather than non-living objects, and are thus capable of more movement and more aggressive targeting of players. When Trap Time is activated in Silent Sacrifice, six of them are spawned near the portal boxes. They will fly towards any player that approaches their prowling radius, even going out of their supposed range to chase players that are still too close to them, inflicting 15 damage per kick. Fortunately, there are some objects on the map that will block their flight path and give their prey the chance to run or fight back, as these creatures can be killed with six light attacks or three heavy attacks. Air Screamers disappear in a cloud of smoke once killed by a player or when Trap Time ends.

Gameplay[]

Tactics against Air Screamers[]

  • Air Screamers can be attacked from behind, though one attack is enough to alert and provoke them.
  • It is better to stay far away from Air Screamers unless left with no choice but to run past them, since Air Screamers would leave their supposed patrol range just to continue assaulting nearby players.
  • Getting behind objects on the map like trees is a good way to temporarily evade Air Screamer attacks, since Air Screamers can be briefly blocked by elements on the map.

Tactics using Red Pyramid Things[]

  • Because of their wide attack range, players can force other players close to an Air Screamer. If done right, the player that enacted the plan can either escape while their enemy is distracted by the attacking Air Screamer, or they can actually continue attacking their enemy along with the Air Screamer, provided that they do not get too close to the Air Screamer themselves (which would lead to them being targeted instead if they are closer to the creature), as all traps from all maps would harm any player regardless of whether they are monster or mortal, and regardless of what game mode is being played.

Themes[]

This is for the monster character. For the themes of the town of Silent Hill itself, see Silent Sacrifice.

Air Screamers are manifestations in the form of Pterodactylus, an animal that appeared in The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, one of the favorite books of Alessa Gillespie, who, as a child, was immolated by her own mother so she could give birth to a malovelent entity worshipped by her mother's cult. It is likely that the Air Screamers were meant to be Alessa's childhood memories blended with the images of demonic creatures and corpses (hence the creature's humanoid legs), giving it an appearance fitting for Silent Hill as Alessa knows it, dark and hellish.

As with most monsters in Dark Deception, Air Screamers can be seen as a representation of various phobias.

Phobia Relevance
Daemonophobia
Fear of Demons
The Air Screamer are hostile predatory creatures that appear to be a cross between demons and corpses given their pale, reddish leathery skin and glassy eyes, fitting for the dark, hellish town they are found in.
Necrophobia
Fear of the Dead and anything associated with Death

Trivia[]

  • Originally, Silent Sacrifice had eight Air Screamers. Two of the creatures down the narrow alleyways near the portal boxes were removed in the 1.4.2 update.
