You can share everything with me: all your secrets, all your mistakes, all your pain. That's what best friends are for, right?

– Agatha

Agatha is a recurring enemy and the second boss in Dark Deception, as well as a playable monster in Monsters & Mortals.

Formerly the daughter of a maid in the mortal world, Agatha was chosen by Bierce to be sacrificed to summon a demon named Malak. Upon entering the Dark Dimension, Agatha was adopted by the demon lord and chosen to protect one of his ring pieces. She now roams the halls of the school, hunting and toying with anyone who invades her realm. Agatha holds a strong grudge against Bierce and frequently expresses her animosity in her drawings and interactions.

Agatha shares a father-daughter bond with Malak and occasionally accompanies him, stabbing Bierce after he invades her ballroom and seeking his attention as he watches Doug in Bearly Buried.

Appearance[]

Agatha has little resemblance to a human child, bearing demented features such as black eyes and rotten teeth coupled with black scar-like marks on her cheeks, reaching up to her ears. She also has long, messy, shoulder-length black hair with uneven curtain-style bangs. Agatha also has no eyebrows.

Agatha’s key features are her arms, which have five unnaturally long, frail fingers, each with almost just as long black claw-like fingernails. The arms themselves look as if they are burned or rotten, so long that when Agatha has them hanging at her sides, she has to bend her fingers. Despite the sheer length of her fingers and claws, she can clench her large hands into fists, prominently shown when she calls Doug a "mean, bad person."

She wears a black overall dress tattered down to her knees, the straps being fastened with black buttons. Underneath the dress is a white blouse with black embroidery. She is barefoot, except for her right leg, which appears wrapped in a beige bandage-like sock. Her toes are exposed, though, implying it could be a cast.

Like many other characters in the game, her mouth moves like a puppet, yet she has no audible speech impairments. Despite having a permanent toothy grin, she can close her mouth to prevent her teeth from showing fully.

Once she enters her Nightmare mode, her eyes will glow bright red (or pinkish red, depending on the lighting), her skin will turn ghoulish gray, and the white of her blouse will turn red. Upon closer inspection, her arms also appear to have a bit of a blood-red color between the gray and the burnt black, implying the transformation hurt her, especially there, and she came close to bleeding.

Personality[]

Sometimes, something so horrible happens to a child that their soul becomes corrupted by rage & sadness. When that happens, an evil child spirit is born from that suffering. This one's name is Agatha.

– E, explaining the origin of Agatha's existence

Decal school banner 01

In a first encounter, Agatha presented herself as a typical child of her age, a playful, friendly, and childish individual. When first meeting Doug, as he stumbled upon her realm, Agatha greets him and welcomes him as a new student of her school, claiming that his presence in this school will excite the residents of the school, saying that her previous 'friends' started to get boring.

Victims of Agatha

Once confronting this demonic entity, Agatha reveals herself similarly to other monsters: blood-thirsty and vicious with a love for violence. Agatha's playfulness extends to sinister sadism, in which she takes pleasure in torturing her victims, viewing them as nothing more than toys for her amusement. You can see silhouettes of kids her age group screaming and pounding the windows throughout her level. She is implied to be quite self-centered as the school sign uses her portal image and is named after her. This can even extent to hypocritsy given her rage of player using speed boost despite her using much more of her own unique abilities.

The same can be demonstrated when Malak releases the monsters from their respective realm, including Agatha. As Agatha got ahold of Bierce, she pierced her through the chest with her long fingers and later playfully asked Malak, whom she sees as her father figure, if she could tear Bierce apart and stab her face. Agatha also has a habit of taunting those she confronts, as when she successfully weakens Bierce, she scolds the latter and tells her to die immediately. She may even have predatory intentions with her victims, evidenced by one of her jumpscares consisting of her biting down on the player's face.

Just like children her range of age, Agatha throws a furious temper tantrum when things do not go her way, as seen when Doug successfully retrieves all of the soul shards and claims the second ring piece. This tantrum grows into a violent rage as she no longer hesitates to hold back her psychotic instincts and chases down the players with the assistance of Malak. The reason was never made evident, but Agatha bears an intense hatred towards Bierce, with the latter bearing the same feelings for the child. However, it may be because Agatha was the maid's daughter Bierce sacrificed to Malak.

Abilities[]

Enhanced senses[]

At first glance, Agatha seems only to possess enough hearing capability to hear Doug open doors. Her hearing is strong enough to detect Doug's breathing, regardless of his general position. This makes hiding from her impossible since she'll eventually find Doug anyway.

Besides hearing, she also has an enhanced sense of smell and is acute enough to recognize certain smells (e.g., the scent of the Murder Monkeys on Doug).

Teleportation[]

Agatha can teleport into any location she wants, bypassing obstacles or cutting off escape routes. While teleporting, she makes purple sparks and black mist.

Telekinesis[]

Agatha can use telekinesis on any object she wants but chooses not to use it at first, likely to make the game fairer. During her escape sequence, she finally decides to use it against Doug by blocking off an entrance to the stage room, and right before her boss fight, she moves the chairs inside to help make room to run.

Fake portal creation[]

Agatha can summon fake portals at will. They appear scribbly with a drawing of her face, and "Portal" is spelled as "Portol".

Invulnerability[]

In Nightmare Mode, Agatha becomes invulnerable to damage, making Primal Fear useless against her. However, she can be stunned outside this form like many other monsters.

Peak human strength[]

Despite her small size, Agatha is powerful enough to violently injure and kill grown-ups with one swipe of her massive claws. This is demonstrated in her kill animations and the post- Mascot Mayhem cutscene, where she stabs Bierce with her fingers. She can also bite down on her victims' faces to kill them.

Fighting[]

Despite her age, Agatha is an excellent fighter, as shown in Monsters & Mortals and the cutscene before Bearly Buried. She teleports on top of Bierce and wrestles her for a short time before stabbing her.

Dark Deception[]

Chapter 1: No Way Back[]

Chapter 1 Ending

Agatha appears as a silhouette in the Chapter 2 teaser, pacing around and swinging her arms back and forth. A child's laughter can be heard (likely placeholder audio for Agatha), as well as pattering.

Chapter 2: Into Madness[]

Agatha is the primary enemy and boss of the game's second level, Elementary Evil.

Agatha Introduce

Before the level starts, Agatha will teleport onto a stage in front of a wall drawing of her. She welcomes Doug to the school and refers to him as a"new friend" and playmate. As the school bell rings, she will teleport away after her speech. She will then search for Doug throughout Zone 1.

Improved School2

Unlike other enemies, Agatha is a singular threat. She will slowly patrol the halls looking for Doug, frequently announcing her location as she taunts him. Due to her heightened senses, she will constantly approach Doug's general vicinity and eventually track him down, making hiding from her impossible. Additionally, she can hear any door Doug opens and will investigate them. She can also teleport throughout the school, usually to pass through closed doorways and to bridge the distance between her and Doug.

Upon spotting Doug, she will pursue him, running faster than his sprinting speed. As such, the Speed power is required to escape from her. Because she needs to teleport to pass through doorways, Doug can close them on her to slow her down. Because Agatha tends to adhere to the middle of the hallways, hugging the wall can allow Doug to gain some distance when turning corners. Upon losing sight of Doug, Agatha will cease her chase and resume her patrol. Agatha is much slower in Easy Mode.

Agatha will disappear into the next zone after collecting all of the shards in Zone 1.

As Doug enters Zone 2, Agatha teleports in front of him, disappointed that Doug took all her "friends" before declaring that she'll take things up a notch the next round. She teleports away afterward, commenting on the victims she entrapped within the school classrooms.

Agatha Zone2 Introduce

Agatha responds more actively to doors and will use her teleportation ability more frequently. She will start teleporting around Doug if she chases him for too long, especially around corners and rooms. Nevertheless, Doug can still listen to her teleportation cue and quickly avoid any possible paths she might have entered.

In Easy Mode, Agatha uses her teleportation ability much more frequently. This can sometimes be useful since Doug can send her to any room he likes by looking at any direction he wants her to be in (this only happens if she's chasing Doug).

After Doug collects the last shard, Agatha tells him she'll never let him get the ring piece. Unlike most other enemies, she will remain inactive until he finally collects the ring piece.

Agatha Complaint

Once Doug collects the ring piece, Agatha closes the doors and teleports before him, launching into a frustrated tirade. She ends by warning that "Daddy" is coming for him, heralding the arrival of Malak.

Agatha Boss Fight

Agatha will join Malak in pursuing Doug if he walks into any of the fake portals around Zone 1. If Doug tries to enter the auditorium through the shortest path available, Agatha will close off the door before he gets inside.

Once Doug is inside, Agatha teleports before him and closes all the doors, attempting to keep him with her forever. She then teleports away and makes all the chairs disappear, making the room darker, and she begins her fight with Doug. During the battle, she'll teleport around Doug to taunt him for a little bit, eventually chasing after him for a little bit, forcing Doug to use his Speed Boost whenever the latter starts running. She repeatedly starts the process, summoning several fake portals around the auditorium to hinder Doug's movement.

After a while, Bierce finally reopens the exit to the portal, causing Agatha to scream in fury at her predicament and chase Doug to the portal for the final time.

Chapter 4: Mortal Ramifications[]

Agatha in Ballroom

After Malak invades Bierce's Ballroom and recovers from her attacks, his clones transform into the monsters Doug encountered in the previous chapters, including Agatha. As Bierce stumbles in disbelief, Agatha teleports onto her and stabs her through the chest with her fingers. After leaving her on the floor, she taunts her, greeting Doug on all 4's as Malak approaches her. She treats Malak as a father figure, which he reciprocates by allowing her to slaughter Bierce later. After complaining about not being allowed to do so immediately, Agatha taunts the wounded Bierce. She is then warded off along with the other monsters after Bierce unleashes the power of her ring piece.

While Agatha does not physically in Bearly Buried, Malak can be heard speaking to her in one of his random dialogues. There are also several stuffed plushies of Agatha on the Trigger Teddies' beds, one of which is held by one of the teddies.

Monsters & Mortals[]

Char select screen agatha

Agatha returns as a Speed class monster in the Monsters & Mortals multiplayer game.

Agatha is tied with the other members of the Speed class as the fastest character in the game. Her attacks deal minimal damage but have little to no cooldown, making her efficient at chipping at her opponents' health. Agatha can easily outrun most Balanced and Power mortals but must exercise caution if they fight back, as she has the lowest amount of health out of all monsters.

Her ultimate ability, "Hello Friend!" allows her to quickly teleport to the player with the lowest health, strike them, and return to her original position. This is highly efficient in the mode mentioned above, as most mortals, especially in the speed or balanced classes, will probably have 80 HP or less when attacked.

It is best to use the "Frenzy Mode" item from the Portal Boxes whenever possible to compensate for her low damage output and boost her overall damage output. Also, use "Primal Fear, " "Speed Drain, " and "Banana Peel" to slow down or stun her opponents. Remember to utilize the "Med Kit" or "Invincibility" items to increase her chances of survivability.

In the Pumpkin Spice skin, Agatha's hair is dyed orange, and she wears a green undershirt. Her dress is orange with a stereotypical jack-o-lantern face. It has a triangular nose and eyes and a wide grin with two upper right teeth and one lower left tooth. The sock on her right leg now has a pattern of black and green stripes. If one looks closely, she also dyed her eyelashes orange.

Relationships[]

Murder Monkeys[]

Agatha says to Doug that he smells like "those monkeys" and in her level, a poster with a Murder Monkey on it says "Stop monkeying around, no running in the halls". She might not like them that much.

Malak[]

Malak adopted Agatha in the afterlife after Bierce sacrificed her to him. Due to his treatment of her, Agatha sees him as a father figure, even calling him "Daddy. " If necessary, she'll often ask him permission to perform sadistic and masochistic acts against his enemies.

Bierce[]

Agatha has a great grudge and hatred toward Bierce, first displayed in an Elementary Evil drawing. The hatred came from Bierce sacrificing her for a wish ritual. Upon encountering Bierce face-to-face, she immediately attacked and wounded her, only stopping likely out of Malak's behest.

Victor[]

Presumably, Agatha knew Victor in her early life. He was the person who helped Bierce make her wish ritual and sacrifice Agatha. Agatha likely bore a grudge against him as well.

Doug Houser[]

Agatha has a wry and ironic relationship with Doug. Although she sees him as a playtime friend, she knows the purpose of why he came to her school and will kill him at any opportunity. Despite this, she doesn't neglect to call him "Friend," saying that she wants to share her pain with him and offers to let him join the souls trapped with her. She is also shown gleefully greeting Doug in the Ballroom cutscene upon spotting him despite what he did in her level.

Elise Houser[]

In her notes, Agatha shows a similar disdain for Elise and is seemingly aware of her current situation. She still takes the time to lead her around the nastier school, hoping to feed off the fear she exudes.

Parallels and Symbolisms[]

Going by the theory suggesting that each nightmare portal is tied to one of Dante Alighieri's Nine Layers of Hell, with the monsters inside them being manifestations of sin, Agatha might symbolize Wrath as she's the maid's daughter that Bierce sacrificed for her ritual to achieve fame and fortune, which caused her spirit to become corrupted by anger and hatred. She is the embodiment of an innocent little girl who went through so much suffering and trauma in her experience that her spirit was twisted into the monster we face today. Despite being the maid's daughter that Bierce sacrificed to Malak, Agatha and her school seem to represent Tammy Houser and the young age at which she was killed.

Trivia[]

  • Agatha is voiced by a professional actor, Kat Cressida, most notable for voicing the cartoon character Dee Dee from Dexter's Laboratory.
  • In her concept arts, she would have much shorter arms than now.
    • In one extra concept art, her face would appear more skeletal, as if her face was ripped off. She also had a lacy blue dress and long, wavy hair.
  • She and the Murder Monkeys were the only enemies to be in the 2014 build of the game.
    • There were four of her in the 2014 build of Dark Deception. Her A.I. was utterly broken, as she would always catch up to the player by teleporting immediately and give them a slight chance to escape before she did her animation. This made the 2014 version of Elementary Evil seemingly impossible to complete, and the only strategy to defeat her is going backward and/or changing directions as much as possible.
    • In 2014, she had powers to help her mess with the player's vision, similar to Mama Bear's.
  • One of her quotes most likely hints that she knows the Murder Monkeys, likely personally.
    • This is supported by how a drawing and a poster of a Murder Monkey can be seen around the school.
  • Agatha appears to follow the trope of little girls turned into evil spirits, who often stalk the protagonists in various horror media. Like those ghosts, Agatha features several characteristics: long black hair, pale skin, dark eyes, and black or white clothing. With that in mind, she may be inspired by Sachiko from Corpse Party, Kayako from the Ju-on: The Grudge, Sadako Yamamura (and Samara Morgan in the American remake) from The Ring, Alma Wade from First Encounter Assault Recon, Kirie from Fatal Frame, and Specimen 4 from Spooky's House of Jumpscares.
    • She's also quite similar to Eveline from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, but instead of a family, she wants friends.
  • Around the school are drawings of her, posters, writing such as "Agatha was here," and one saying to vote Agatha for school president.
    • In addition, the school is called "Agatha Elementary".
  • As confirmed by Vince Livings in the 16th Q&A, Agatha is the identity of a maid's daughter whom Bierce sacrificed for her selfish desires, which explains Agatha's hatred towards the latter.
    • While looking around the school map, a projection on a school board is of a graveyard. Bierce mentions that the unmarked grave must be Agatha's, referencing how she died at Bierce's hands.
    • A wall drawing of Agatha and Bierce can also be found in Elementary Evil, which shows her hatred towards Bierce for sacrificing her.
  • Agatha could represent Didaskaleinophobia, the fear of going to school; Pedophobia, the fear of kids; and Anthropariophobia, the fear of short people.
  • She is the first physical enemy who speaks, as Malak doesn't physically appear until later.
  • When the player completes Elementary Evil, Doug remarks that Agatha was almost the same age as “her.” The "her" in question is very likely Tammy.
  • Agatha "also appears" in Crazy Carnevil as cutouts in the big tent and as a plushie in the stands.
  • Although Agatha cannot open doors around School as the player does and must rely on teleportation to bypass through doors, she often gets stuck on doors when the player opens them.
    • Similar to this, Agatha has a chance of glitching through the floor in Zone 1, keeping her trapped in one spot, making collecting Soul Shards a piece of cake. This bug fixes itself upon starting Zone 2 and cannot be used in said Zone, as Agatha teleports (Note: this was found by replaying Elementary Evil).
  • The black marks on her cheeks may be a reference to SCP-1913-1, which coincidentally shares Agatha's name.
  • Agatha and the Dread Duckies are the only enemies in Dark Deception to have four different kill animations.
  • Despite one of the death tips and one of the posters in the school hinting that she can hear doors, she can hear the breathing of certain individuals and pinpoint precisely where they are, proving she can hear more than just doors.
  • Agatha and Mama Bear are the only enemies to be both bosses and regular enemies.
  • Agatha is the smallest boss in Dark Deception, but in the entire series, she is the 2nd smallest boss enemy, following The Alphabet Letters.
  • When stunned, she will lean back, face upwards, and shift her arms and head around. If one were to come close to her, they could hear her groaning in disorientation.
  • Despite her large hands, she is able to write as seen by messages around the school.
  • According to Vince, Malak views Agatha as more of a valuable pawn than a possible daughter.
  • According to the Super Dark Deception Steam trading cards, Agatha is apparently 97 years old.
